GINZA ILLUMINATION 2017: Paths of Light – Flowers Illuminating the Future

Now in its seventh year, GINZA ILLUMINATION 2017 is underway. Ginza's Chuo Dori and Harumi Dori streets are beautifully illuminated with "light flower baskets," an artistic display. The event runs until Sunday, January 8, 2018.

Ginza's Streets Aglow with Artistic Flair

GINZA ILLUMINATION 2017, an event that began in 2011, adorns Chuo Dori from 1-chome to 8-chome and Harumi Dori from Sukiyabashi to the Ginza 4-chome intersection with illuminations.

This year, continuing from last year, the event features "light flower baskets" designed by the French creation studio PITAYA, hung from streetlights to envelop Ginza's cityscape in an artistic world.

A total of 60 streetlights are adorned: 46 on Chuo Dori and 14 on Harumi Dori. This doubles the number from last year, expanding the illuminated area. It is the first time for hanging illuminations to be installed on Harumi Dori.

Illuminations are lit from 3 PM to midnight. The "light flower baskets" emit a warm white glow, reflecting the twilight sun and city neons, illuminating the streets.

As in previous years, seven international luxury brands with stores on Chuo Dori and Harumi Dori, collaborating through the "Ginza International Luxury Committee" (GILC), have set up "Paths of Light Charity Donation Boxes" within their stores and other participating establishments to support reconstruction efforts in the Tohoku region.

The unified illumination across Ginza's Chuo Dori and Harumi Dori creates an even greater sense of cohesion than last year, allowing visitors to experience a fantastical and elegant Ginza cityscape. The event runs until Sunday, January 8, 2018. We highly recommend a visit.

PITAYA
A creation studio by French artists David Lesort and Arnaud Giroud. They develop playful and poetic styles across various fields, practicing environmentally conscious creation by considering not only the energy emitted by the light itself but also reducing energy consumption in materials and transportation. Based in Lyon, the "City of Lights," they actively participate in light festivals worldwide, expanding their reach. In Japan, their illumination projects include "Kura Dori Light Festival" in Nishinomiya City (2012-2015), and this is their second consecutive year in the Kanto region.
