Sunday nights, a personal moment of bliss, flowing gently with exquisite music, is a time of pure indulgence for adults. This is the time further enriched by DJ Toshio Matsuura’s radio program, ‘TOKYO MOON’.—He broadcasts his curated selection of wonderful music from around the world, along with intellectually stimulating topics for adults, every Sunday from midnight on Inter FM 76.1MHz. Here, we look back at the program that just aired each week. This week, we presented a collection of unique waltzes that transcend time, from jazz to soul.

Lucas Santana, a multi-instrumentalist who garnered global attention as a leading figure in modern Brazilian music with his previous work, ‘Sem Nostalgia,’ has unveiled a new work where his experimental sound has evolved further, even before the excitement from his last release has subsided. The program began with ‘O Deus Que Devasta Mas Também Cura,’ a medium-tempo waltz number from this captivating new album, performed with an orchestra.

Next, we journeyed to Argentina for a cool big band waltz jazz piece from 1972 by Jorge Lopez Ruiz, featuring a poetry reading by writer and poet José Czerkaszy. From Germany, we introduced Horst Jankowski, a jazz pianist and composer, with his choral jazz arrangement of The Doors’ ‘Light My Fire.’

‘Dots And Loops’
We returned to modern waltz numbers. Stereolab, a band that pioneered the lounge boom of the 90s with their unique sound, heavily influenced by 70s Krautrock, jazz, and soundtracks. We also featured ‘Gone,’ an electric number by Swell Session, a project by Andreas Sager from the Nordic club jazz scene, featuring Yukimi Nagano, now active with Little Dragon and Gorillaz, before her breakthrough. These were some of the new and old, distinctive waltzes we presented.
