An Innovative Platform Embodying "Beyond Jazz"

"TOKYO LAB" is an experimental music event where next-generation musicians pursuing their unique sounds gather, embodying "beyond Jazz." It functions as a space where artists with diverse musical backgrounds explore new forms of musical expression, transcending the conventional boundaries of jazz.
This event is the second installment, following "TOKYO LAB 2025 Session "Lookin'For A New New"" held at the same venue on January 18, 2025. The previous performance was highly acclaimed by music industry professionals and fans alike for its early introduction of talented next-generation musicians and artists.
This time, Nimisha Anan, a multi-instrumentalist from India based in Japan, has been invited as a guest. She is a versatile multi-instrumentalist who handles guitar, keyboard, vocals, and composition as the frontwoman of the three-piece band "Manda." Manda was formed in 2022 and is active primarily in Tokyo and Yokohama.
Nimisha Anan's languid and exotic vocal style possesses a unique charm, blending her Indian musical roots with contemporary sensibilities. This session will feature a collaboration between her distinctive vocals and Japan's accomplished musicians.
Masayoshi Tsuboguchi will participate as keyboardist, continuing his role as bandmaster from the previous session. Tsuboguchi is highly regarded as a keyboardist who continuously explores new directions in the Japanese jazz scene. The rhythm section features young drummer Shinsyo Matsuura, whose innovative drumming style is praised by many musicians.
On bass is Ryoji Orihara, a master of the fretless bass who performs worldwide. Orihara is an accomplished bassist, sometimes called "Japan's Jaco Pastorius," whose technical and melodic playing is highly acclaimed both domestically and internationally.
This special band was formed exclusively for this live performance. By bringing together members with different musical backgrounds, the expectation is that new sounds will emerge, transcending the boundaries of conventional music genres. The fusion of Indian musical elements with Japan's sophisticated jazz musicians holds the potential to offer an unprecedented musical experience. It is a rare opportunity to witness the moment when Eastern and Western musical cultures intersect.
"TOKYO LAB" plays a crucial role in discovering and nurturing new talent in the Japanese music scene. The existence of such a platform provides a valuable stage for young musicians and contributes to the revitalization of the music industry as a whole.
Through the continuation of such experimental initiatives, the Japanese music scene is sure to evolve into something more diverse and rich.
