Music That Travels Through Time, From Emerging Artists to Nostalgic Melodies

How did you spend this recent long holiday? With the most pleasant weather of the year now, many of you likely traveled domestically or abroad. I, however, had events in the first and second halves of the break, so my travels were limited to a roughly 10-kilometer walk within Tokyo on a fine day. Even so, it lifted my spirits and I felt a surge of energy. With that energy, I began to consider visiting the disaster-stricken areas as a volunteer, where I imagined they would be short-handed after the holidays.

This time, we featured a standout track from Raphael Saadiq, the new release from an Afro-funk band from the Netherlands whose nine members are all teenagers, nostalgic numbers from the 1940s-60s, and tunes brimming with the exotic charm of India and the Middle East.

Let's Send Your Records to the Damaged Jazz Cafe

Many of you may already know from TV, newspapers, and the internet, but about a month ago, I read an article about Katsutoshi Tomiyama, who runs a jazz cafe in Rikuzentakata City, southeastern Iwate Prefecture, an area devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. He lost both his shop and his precious record collection twice in a short period due to fire and the tsunami. As a fellow jazz lover, I wanted to find a way to support him. I contacted him through a newspaper company and offered to donate records. Later, I received a reply from Mr. Tomiyama himself, who is currently evacuated to Ofunato City, expressing his sincere gratitude and acceptance of the offer.

Following this, realizing the difficulty of undertaking this support alone, and with an upcoming jazz event featuring only live performances planned with my DJ colleagueShuya Okino, I immediately discussed it with Okino and we decided to support this initiative through the event. The venue, ageHa, readily agreed and even offered to act as the secretariat for the project.

After much deliberation, we have decided on the following support activities: We will send one jazz record each from everyone, along with a message, to Mr. Tomiyama. We hope that the music on these records will heal the hearts of the local people in their new shop in the future, and we now ask for your cooperation.

Currently, reconstruction of the store at the tsunami-stricken site is restricted by local ordinances. We will provide regular updates on the situation through the event's official website and Twitter. Thank you for your understanding.
