Fusion of Japanese Traditional Techniques and Eyewear
"Oliver Peoples" was founded in 1987 on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, USA. Its early collections, inspired by American vintage eyewear, became bestsellers through the catalog of luxury department store Neiman Marcus, and the brand gained recognition when it was featured in "TIME" magazine. Currently, artisans in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, handle the production, offering classic and elegant models that enhance the wearer's individuality.
"Hosoo" was founded in 1688 as a weaving house serving major temples in Kyoto. In 1923, it began wholesale distribution of Nishijin-ori, which had previously been used only for kimonos and obi for a select few, such as aristocrats, to the general public. Today, it maintains and utilizes its exceptional skills, actively collaborating with various industries including interiors and fashion, to present Japanese traditional culture from a new perspective.
This collaboration came about when Oliver Peoples, who sympathized with Hosoo's creative philosophy, made the offer. The sunglasses lineup includes the Boston type "SUNSET BLVD" and the round type "KUROMON." The design is characterized by an original pattern applied to the inside of the temples. Using special ink printing and coating technology, the pattern is layered four times onto a 0.3mm core. Furthermore, the temples are crafted using the "shinbari" (core-insertion) technique, which is rarely used today.
The accompanying case is luxuriously finished using exquisite Nishijin-ori fabric. The same pattern as the sunglasses temples is expressed with 8 colors of silk thread. Based on a classic pattern inspired by Kyoto, a pop pattern inspired by Los Angeles is added on top. We encourage you to see for yourself Oliver Peoples' modern sunglasses, born from the fusion of Japanese traditional techniques and eyewear, at our stores. The release is scheduled for late June.
