Proposing real, contemporary formal wear for all seasons

Though PEELSLOWLY has only been active for a year, it has garnered praise as a formal brand offering "dresses that can be worn agelessly, are functional, and can be styled with sets." This season marks its debut at Isetan Shinjuku.

Regarding the brand's inception, Mr. Akutsu explained, "YOU had the idea to create a formal collection for a long time, and the timing was perfect for it to come to fruition."

The brand's theme is formal occasions such as weddings and funerals. The first collection, a collaboration between YOU and designer Akutsu, focused exclusively on "black," a color they both love and consider essential. However, as the brand progressed through last autumn and this spring, they responded to requests for "more variety in celebratory dresses" by incorporating colored dresses and patterned designs that add a pop of color.

YOU's role at PEELSLOWLY involves her personal styling for all her media appearances and interviews. "At the beginning of each season, she brings her accumulated experience and her personal styling image to the table. Based on that, we discuss ideas together. After I, as the designer, give them form, YOU wears everything and makes adjustments until completion. Then, YOU decides on the styling for the lookbook," he shared.

It's time to redefine formal wear

Mr. Akutsu described the design philosophy: "Our primary customers are women aged 30 to 50, so our patterns are designed to flatter various body types. Once these practical aspects are decided, we focus on the design, creating dresses that make a statement in a single piece. The materials and sewing are almost entirely sourced from Japan."

For this season's lookbook shoot, they introduced color into the background to create a relaxed atmosphere, with the theme being "how our clothes look when incorporated into everyday situations."

Regarding the brand's theme of "contemporary formal wear," Mr. Akutsu stated, "We felt it was time to update the definition of formal wear, which led to the creation of PEELSLOWLY. We aim for a broad interpretation that accommodates diverse ages and body types, rather than a narrow set of values, offering variety within that scope." He envisions the brand expanding to create a wide range of ceremonial wear, with black formal attire as its core.
