A Spinning Knit Company Selects Domestic and International Brands Focused on Craftsmanship

Select Shop "GEA" Opens in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture

On April 18th, "GEA," a select shop, opened in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture, in a relocated stone building that was formerly a sake brewery and later used as a factory. GEA is the first select shop by Sato Seni, a spinning knit company founded in Sagae City in 1932 (Showa 7). The company, which has provided yarn to world-renowned designers, handles everything from yarn production to buying. It proposes "a vision for retail that can disseminate culture through new business development, considering the future of Japanese industry centered in depopulating regions."

Sato Seni is engaged in the planning and manufacturing of yarn, knit fabrics, and knit products, developing its own original items, wholesale, and OEM for other companies. It is also known for its yarn being used by top European fashion houses.

Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture, where the company was founded, has a population of approximately 42,000. It is located about 2 hours and 40 minutes from Tokyo Station to Yamagata Station via the Tohoku Shinkansen, and then about 30 minutes from Sagae Station via the Left泽 Line.

The store name "GEA" is a play on the word "GEAR," which means cogwheel. While the correct spelling is "GEAR," it also serves as a digital term meaning "to advance to the next stage." The cogwheel symbolizes that the entire mechanism cannot function if even one part is missing, signifying the importance of each component.

Displays and Fixtures Feature Old Spinning Machines

The shop combines the stone architecture of the former sake brewery with modern design, using old spinning machines as display tools. The interior is a space where the past and present are blended. Antiques sourced from Paris and New York are placed throughout, adding to the shop's originality.

The selection includes not only domestic brands but also emerging brands from Europe and America, as well as chic and casual items from high-end brands. Sophisticated goods from around the world are also available, all chosen for their commitment to craftsmanship.

Lifestyle Goods, Stationery, and Books Also Available

Masaki Sato, the fourth-generation president, explains GEA's role: "There are few shops in rural areas that people want to visit or that satisfy local residents. While SPA (specialty store retailer of private label apparel) type uniform products and shopping malls are increasing, many people seek experiences beyond that. Creating a unique commercial facility here will not only satisfy locals but also attract visitors from Tokyo and around the world, introducing Yamagata's various assets such as its food, nature, and culture. We aim to disseminate our own unique offerings rather than just chasing what's available in Tokyo."

The adjacent "GEA#2" features tableware by Yamagata artisans, lifestyle goods from around the world, stationery, books, and furniture, along with a cafe space serving coffee. Furthermore, a gallery space within the store will be used to "introduce highly sensitive creators in Japan, offering them a venue for solo exhibitions."

Future plans include a boutique hotel where visitors can stay, and attracting specialty restaurants and food establishments. "Rather than opening stores nationwide, if one store can achieve ultimate branding, people will come from afar. We aim to create an enjoyable space where one can spend the entire day without boredom, becoming a globally recognized establishment. As we will not be increasing the number of stores, we will focus on e-commerce," he adds, outlining his future aspirations.
