—What inspired you to choose this profession?

It was my experience as a cut model during university. Each time, they changed my look dramatically, and I was always so impressed. This perspective eventually shifted to seeing how a hairdresser could 'transform' someone. From there, I was set on this path. I attended beauty school while in my fourth year of university and joined this salon immediately after graduation.

—What are your specialty and favorite styles?

From a spaist's perspective, it's definitely massage techniques! As for hairstyles, I'm all about bobs. In my aesthetic sense, the bob style most beautifully enhances a woman's facial features, particularly accentuating the jawline. You can achieve a feminine look with a bob, even without long hair.

—Do you have a motto or any particular considerations when you work?

The words a client told me when I was still an assistant always stay with me: 'All the intentions of the person performing the service are conveyed through their hands.' As humans, our physical condition and motivation can fluctuate daily, and we tend to think these feelings are personal. But in reality, everything is transmitted through our touch. Since then, I've made it a point to truly connect with my clients, not just physically but emotionally.

—What is the most memorable episode you've had so far?

A client told me after a head spa, 'Your hands suit me the best.' I think everyone feels this way. It's truly rewarding to be told you're the best. That's what this job is all about.

A Salon Where Staff Also Feel at Home

—Could you tell us about any favorite cosmetics, beauty devices, or tools you use?

I love the 'Platinum Electronic Roller ReFa' (Extra Communication). It uses microcurrents. Its V-shape allows for effective massage just by rolling it, so I always use it to stimulate the lymph in my face and neck to reduce puffiness. For skincare, I'm hooked on the 'Soy Isoflavone' (Nameraka Honpo) lotion. Its moisturizing power is incredible. Since it's affordable, I use it generously.

—What has moved you recently (or what books, movies, etc. have moved you)?

I was deeply moved by the Great Barrier Reef, which I saw for the first time on a trip to Australia at the end of last year. Nature is truly magnificent!

—What is the appeal of uka?

The staff are very close-knit. It's a salon that's comfortable not only for clients but also for the staff.

—What is Kiho Watanabe's appeal?

Her sense of aesthetic balance is superb. At a glance, she can identify what's off or what could be improved, and her ideas and advice are always spot-on. She also has a strong drive to challenge new things; she's remarkable in every aspect.

—What are the selling points of the Midtown branch?

It's rare for a hair salon to have this much natural light. Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, there's abundant greenery, allowing you to feel the changing seasons. The nail booth, in particular, is exceptional. The seats face the windows, so you can gaze out at the scenery throughout your treatment.

—Finally, could you share your goals for this year?

I want to broaden my client base. While we already serve a wide age range, I'd love to expand it further and welcome clients from generations I haven't interacted with before. To achieve this, I will continue to refine myself and aim for further growth.
