The brand began in 1994 in L.A. as a T-shirt line. In 1996, it launched its first collection of women's cut-and-sew pieces. It later evolved into two lines: the high-quality basic line "Standard James Perse" featuring jackets, knits, pants, and dresses, and the "James Perse Los Angeles" line of real California clothing. The men's collection was introduced in 1998.

The brand currently operates dozens of shops across the United States and is sold at premier retailers like Barneys New York and Nordstrom, as well as Colette in Paris and Corso Como in Italy.
