Since 2005, Scott has been photographing stylish people he encounters on street corners around the world and featuring them on his blog, 'The Sartorialist.' He received the Best Blog Award from TIME magazine in 2010 and the Photo Blog Award from LIFE magazine's website in 2011, earning him recognition as one of 'the world's most influential designers' (TIME magazine).
This time, Brother, known for its printers and other products, invited Scott to commemorate the launch of their new printer, 'MyMio.' Over two days, August 23rd and 24th, he visited spots in Tokyo such as Harajuku, Aoyama, and Omotesando, capturing snapshots of well-dressed individuals he encountered in those locations. This process was documented in a film.
The documentary also captures Scott's efforts to photograph the personal aspects of his subjects, as well as his visit to Ningyocho, Tokyo, with his friend and men's fashion director, Yukio Akamine, where he experienced the craftsmanship of artisans.
Scott commented to OPENERS about his impressions of Tokyo fashion: 'It's very interesting! It's so diverse. Tokyo has its own unique style, and it's incredibly creative. There's a relentless pursuit and curiosity for fashion. Traditional, contemporary, tailored styles, preppy styles – they're all mixed together, creating such a wide variety, which I think is what sets it apart from other countries.'
Consistency is Key
Furthermore, regarding his definition of a 'stylish person,' he stated, 'Consistency in one's attire is important. It's not about always looking the same, but about the clothes reflecting the person's style. Whether elements differ, the ability to maintain consistency also depends on the individual's inner self.' Indeed, in the documentary, he also says, 'It's about how people choose their clothes and express themselves.'
Additionally,Great East Japan Earthquakehe sent a message of encouragement to Japan, which is moving forward with its recovery, and to the people who love Japanese fashion: 'Don't ever give up, keep going! And please continue to evolve Japanese fashion.'
