A Culmination of Past Collections
On the final day of Paris Fashion Week, Louis Vuitton's 10:00 AM show marked the last collection designed by Marc Jacobs. At the entrance to the usual tent venue, maids were cleaning, reminiscent of the show two years prior themed around a hotel. I entered the venue, wondering why Jacobs, who never repeated a production, would do this...
Fountains, carousels, elevators, escalators, hotel doors... all the past themes were lined up. It was a presentation that culminated all his previous collections. The rumors about Marc's retirement were true after all.
Out came a combination of black lace with bead embroidery, a lace top reminiscent of couture techniques, and distressed denim. Peacock feathers adorned the head. The lace was exquisitely delicate, the embroidery opulent, and the denim utterly authentic.
The large clock on the stage, which read exactly 10:00 AM at the start of the show, had its hands turned backward to 9:45 AM by the time Marc appeared for the finale after the 15-minute show. A final collection that truly brought the past back to life. Marc, who thrilled us every season for 16 years. Thank you.
From next season, Nicolas Ghesquière, formerly of Balenciaga, will take over.
J.W. Anderson, the most talked-about designer in London, has been appointed creative director of Loewe starting next season. Known for his authentic modern wear, his SS14 collection took a decidedly more fashion-forward turn. Supple fabrics like shirring and pleats hug the body. He is a designer to watch.
