A Striking Collection of 24 Looks

A shift from the cooling climes of Milan, this is a collection report from Paris, where summer has returned. Inside the venue, the atmosphere was thick with a heat that rivaled the outdoors.

COMME des GARÇONS was held in an even smaller venue than the previous season. In the dim space, light illuminated the stage as the first model appeared. A voluminous dress, sculpted dramatically and seemingly emerging from the body, took shape. Above a fitted bra top and culottes, an organza gown with velvet piping created a exquisite contrast. The garments, visible from 360 degrees, transformed under the lights, creating a myriad of forms.

A total of 24 looks. The lighting and music changed to match each garment. These were meticulously crafted, monochromatic forms. This is 21st-century haute couture. 'I wanted to find something new, so I created things that weren't clothes,' said designer Rei Kawakubo. Non-woven fabric, quilting, pleats, ruffles. Indeed, all familiar elements appeared in unfamiliar shapes that transcended clothing. I felt the power of new 'clothes'.
