“My mission is to present my style and have everyone wear it.”

Terumi Hagiwara (hereinafter, Hagiwara)There's talk these days about young people drifting away from trends. What is the meaning of presenting at Paris Fashion Week?

Isabel Marant (hereinafter, Marant)Because it's the mission of a fashion designer. I love being a designer, and I believe that presenting my own style and having end-users wear it, all of that, is the job of a designer.

HagiwaraYou've said your target is the 'ordinary girl.' Are you conscious of the difference between that reality and your collection line?

MarantNo, perhaps high brands that lead trends prioritize image. But my collection line is clothes that you can buy immediately, thinking 'I want to wear that!'

HagiwaraWhat do you think about fast fashion, which has also been pointed out as declining recently?

MarantI think it's good when designers themselves are involved, but what about copied products? Once, I made sneakers to match an outfit, and they sold very well. Then, just those sneakers were copied and sold cheaply. It's a shame that only the sneakers are walking around without understanding the meaning of my style.

HagiwaraDo you spend your days off with your family?

MarantYes, I spend them normally, playing with my nine-year-old son and cooking at our suburban home where we spend every weekend.

HagiwaraWhat do you think you'll be doing in 10 years?

MarantThe same as now. I'll probably still be presenting collections.

The interview took place at the Omotesando shop. The interior design evokes a single-family home. She laughed, saying that stores worldwide have unique designs tailored to their respective cities, "If they were all the same, I'd get bored!"
