Flowing, Draped Dresses――LENA LUTSKO
The Spring/Summer 2017 Tokyo Collections showcased a lineup of compelling brands. While some brands were absent from Tokyo to focus on their Paris ventures, the collections were invigorated by an increasing number of invited international designers.
LENA LUTSKO presented her collection on the final day at Miyashita Park. Designer Helena Lutsko hails from Crimea. The year after graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, she participated in the "Newcomers from Europe" exhibition in Tokyo in 2007, alongside Demna Gvasalia of VETEMENTS and with "Stereotypes." She debuted her first collection with fellow students Mikio Sakabe and Akira Naka.
The Spring/Summer '17 collection, presented in the afternoon, featured dresses with soft, swaying silhouettes defined by draping, tucks, and asymmetry. The theme was "Lucky." All items are handcrafted with meticulous techniques in the atelier. She is noted as a designer who conveys quality and reality.
Tailored Styles That Build and Break Form――MIKIO SAKABE
That evening, MIKIO SAKABE's collection was also held at Miyashita Park. This space was an artificial environment, like a stadium illuminated by lights. While previous collections often showcased subculture-inspired clothing through performance, this season focused more intently on the garments themselves. Tailored jackets with voluminous shoulders and sleeves created elegant silhouettes, paired with fringe-adorned flared pants. A meticulously pleated mini skirt was worn asymmetrically, unbuttoned at the side. A striped, voluminous-sleeved jumpsuit was also effortlessly chic. The playful details were grounded in expertly tailored garments, lending an air of elegance.
