The Haunted Space Between Sounds
Marc Jacobs has enlisted Japanese musician Keiji Haino for the Fall/Winter 2016 advertising campaign. The enigmatic singer-songwriter, who provided the innovative soundtrack for the critically acclaimed runway show in New York this February, joins a cast of distinctive personalities handpicked by Marc Jacobs himself.
A moody chime soundtrack, exploring the haunted moment between tones, resonated within the stark, white circular set. Haino, who has been creating music since the 1970s, has influenced a wide range of music with his unique style, including the Japanese concept of 'ma,' or negative space in sound.
Designer Marc Jacobs shared the following about Keiji Haino on his Instagram (@themarcjacobs):
KEIJI, SOUND
“Keiji is known for incorporating 'ma,' a Japanese interpretation of sound that translates to 'pause' or 'space' in English. I was introduced to Keiji's music a week before the Fall/Winter 2016 show by a friend who was teaching me about meditation music and alternative sounds.
For every show, the music selection is as important as the set, the clothes, and the models. It is an indispensable element in creating the calculated experience, expression, and perspective of the collection. Hearing Keiji's music piece, which felt simply, strangely, and uncannily right, Katie Grand, Steve Mackey, and I became obsessed with the shadows and echoes left by the orderly bells and cymbals.
From there, we stripped down the set idea, leaving only the clothes and shadows in view. As the phrase goes, 'the haunted space between sounds,' we aimed to leave only the contrast between Keiji's refined music and the heavy thud of boots on the floor. Keiji's music is transcendent, meditative, and dimensionally unique. I deeply respect the unwavering devotion and emotion poured into his work. His disciplined technique and intelligent approach are unparalleled.
I am truly honored to present the Fall/Winter 2016 advertising campaign, powerfully captured by David Sims, featuring Keiji Haino's otherworldly and enigmatic talent.”
The campaign images, shot by David Sims in New York in March, were styled by Katie Grand and are scheduled to appear online and in print from August.
