Terumi Hagiwara's Series Vol. 147 | "SEE NOW, BUY NOW"

Will the designer business model change?

"SEE NOW, BUY NOW"

The 2016 Autumn/Winter collection saw new volumes and long silhouettes emerge as trends. Hermès presented a feminine collection with a new sense of volume.

In March, when the 2016 Autumn/Winter collections were shown, the phrase "SEE NOW, BUY NOW" sent shockwaves through the fashion world. It means "buy now what you saw in the collection now." Previously, it was "SEE NOW, BUY LATER," where "the Autumn/Winter collection shown in spring is bought in autumn, six months later." This changes the business model, with brands emerging that will synchronize collections with in-store merchandise.

In response, many luxury brands are saying, "It's physically difficult to produce the items. There should be joy in receiving the product after waiting patiently for six months" (Kering Group C.E.O.). We want to have the luxury of slowly choosing the items we desire after seeing many collections. While we want to cherish that sentiment, perhaps...

This poses a significant problem for media outlets that have built their business on information six months in advance, and for manufacturers who have followed trends set by pioneering designer brands.

This autumn, new volumes and lengths are particularly fresh. Among these, the standout items are long coats and long dresses. A relaxed shoulder volume paired with a gracefully falling long silhouette.

Hermès pairs classic coats in shades like soft top grey and pink beige with flared skirts or dresses. Double-faced wool cashmere and knit materials add lightness to the voluminous forms. My favorite is a grey wool cashmere dress. It features generously cut, long flared sleeves and a gently swaying flared skirt. The key styling element is cinching the waist with a thin belt. While the collection styled it elegantly with grey calf boots, I'd like to try pairing it with this year's trendy mountain boots. Then, adding a double-faced coat... This makes me wish for the "SEE NOW, BUY LATER" time! I'll complete the look with a felt hat with layered lace, reserved from Maison Michel.
