London-Based Creative Duo: The Bellamacina Sisters
London-based sisters and cutting-edge creative duo Greta & Cosima Bellamacina star in the new installment of Stella McCartney's styling series, Double Act. Greta, a poet whose work often explores heartbreak and feminism, and Cosima, an artist currently illustrating a debut children's book, showcase their individual styles using Stella McCartney's Summer 2016 Ready-to-Wear and eyewear collections.
—Tell us about yourselves. Where are you from? What do you do?
Greta Bellamacina (Greta):We were born in London and grew up near Hampstead Heath. I still find a certain magic in its wildness. As a poet, the way people and landscapes interact is very important to me. I also work as a filmmaker; last year, I made a short film titled 'Ezra Pound: The Last Cantos,' featuring his 90-year-old daughter, the poet and translator Mary de Rachewiltz.
Cosima Bellamacina (Cosima):I love to create. I believe there are infinite magical opportunities that arise from each individual. When I have time, I paint, and I'm always conceptualizing new subjects and characters. Currently, I'm involved in creating a children's book. I'm also pursuing a degree in art history in London.
—As sisters, do you think your styles are similar or different?
Greta:I think we both share a love for vintage styles. Cosima is particularly good at imagining outfits and finding hidden treasures.
Cosima:I've always been inspired by Greta. I remember spending hours at Camden Town market after school, trying on quirky silver boots and evening gowns.
—What are your favorite looks from this shoot?
Greta:The mod look with the black and white checked polo shirt and skirt. I love that it's something you can wear anytime and feel strong in.
Cosima:I'm partial to the navy jumpsuit, which combines functionality with femininity.
—Do you share clothes?
Greta:We always share. Sometimes it gets to the point where I don't know which is mine and which is hers. She'll probably keep it until I ask for it back, and I think that's the joy of sharing clothes – when they come back to you, they always feel somehow new.
Cosima:Greta is the queen of leopard print. I always rely on her for fabulous party dresses.
—If you had to describe each other's style in three words, what would they be?
Greta:Cosima's style is: whimsical, bold, and cheeky.
Cosima:Greta's is: original, artistic, and independent.
—What are your plans for this year?
Greta:A feature-length documentary I scripted and directed, focusing on the decline of public libraries in the UK, will be screened in independent cinemas across the country on May 23rd. It examines the current state and relevance of British libraries. I've also just launched a poetry publishing house called New River Press – named after a lost river that once supplied London with drinking water – with my boyfriend, the artist and poet Robert Montgomery. We're set to publish seven poetry collections. Additionally, I'll be releasing a personal collection titled 'Perishing Tame' through the same press.
Cosima:I'm finishing all my exams and planning a trip through Europe by train. My first stop is Ibiza with friends! I intend to continue creating various portraits and illustrating children's books. I'll also be working on a new video project in California this autumn.
Poet Greta Pens a Special Piece
For this project, Greta specially wrote a poem titled 'The Retirement of Bees.' A video showcasing this is available.
