A Bag Born from the Fusion of Artistic Vision and Imagination with Christian Louboutin's Craftsmanship

Christian Louboutin has launched the charity bag "AFRICABA" in support of Valerie Schlumberger, representative of the West African support organization "La Maison Rose," and to aid the most vulnerable women and children in the region.

La Maison Rose focuses on the skilled craftsmanship and talent of artisans in Senegal, helping women find practical and creative paths toward recovery. The handcrafted work provided by the women of La Maison Rose embodies an innate artistry and imagination.

Designer Christian Louboutin, sharing the vision of his longtime friend Valerie Schlumberger, created the charity bag "Africaba" by merging it with Christian Louboutin's own skills.

Christian Louboutin speaks about Valerie Schlumberger:

Christian Louboutin and Valerie Schlumberger

How long have you known Valerie? And were you aware of her thoughts on Senegalese artisans and artists?

Valerie is an old friend; I first met her when I was a teenager. She has always been interested in West Africa, and every time she returned from her home in Senegal, she would bring back many things. They were created by local people using materials that were not expensive, yet they were beautiful, and I was captivated by her smart approach. I believe she finds joy in supporting and sharing this approach with others.

Is there anything specific about Valerie's work that particularly interests you?

While I think generating funds through selling products is wonderful, Valerie's efforts go beyond simply raising money for charity by selling art and crafts. She is also contributing to the wider recognition and expansion of traditional African craftsmanship. Furthermore, she is deeply invested in the future of artists, valuing and nurturing their unique talents. I find her approach very compelling.

What motivated this project?

Valerie comes from a large family, so she understands the importance of community for mutual independence. She also sees assisting others as her mission.

What are your thoughts on the works created by the artists and artisans?

I have long admired the colors and graphic expressions in African art and crafts. We even purchased furniture from Valerie's CSAO shop in Paris and displayed it in Christian Louboutin boutiques for years. In Africa, I believe skilled craftsmanship and art are intrinsically linked. Artists may be surrounded by discarded materials, but they use them with an innocent, childlike instinct to create something new. They possess a natural sense of ecology, reusing and redefining.

Was the process of working on this project different from your usual design process?

It was entirely different from the usual Christian Louboutin process of creating a sample and then perfecting its reproduction. While I had ideas for the design, I prioritized the artisans' interpretation in the final creation. The charm of this bag lies not in perfection, but in the subtle variations that emerge from collaborating with the people who actually make things by hand.

Concluding the interview, I felt that Christian's creative spirit, his relentless pursuit of endless possibilities, and the familial ethos of his team were also present in the La Maison Rose workshops. This bag teaches us that in Africa, creating beauty from the surrounding environment is natural, and it is essential for exercising one's imagination.

La Maison Rose continues to create products that reflect new life by ensuring the use of recycled materials, a symbolic gesture for the lives of the women working there. Valerie explains, "La Maison Rose assists young women and girls in difficult situations. We provide shelter for those who are homeless, living on the streets with or without children, and even pregnant women. At La Maison Rose, we offer a warm welcome, listen, and provide appropriate care that extends to their children. We also recognized the need to provide vocational training for the young women we shelter. My true work is with women. When involved in a charity project, my primary goal is always to help women become self-reliant."
