A New Nina Ricci Unveiled in Tokyo
Peter Copping was appointed Artistic Director of Nina Ricci three years ago. The 2012 A/W collection, with its contrast of classic and modern, beautifully showcased the new Nina Ricci. Following this, the collection was presented at the Museum of Painting in Tokyo. We introduce the collection along with an interview with Peter, who visited Japan.
“I love Paris! Ever since I was studying to become a designer in London, I wanted to work in Paris.” Nina Ricci is a venerable maison that began with haute couture by Madame Ricci in 1932. It is a brand that represents Parisian femininity. This season, the collection featured soft pieces that incorporated modernity and a relaxed feel. Lace was incorporated into tweed and knits, and the pencil silhouettes were not overly classic, truly capturing the present moment.
“Nina Ricci is the epitome of Parisian style. The foundation is a woman who is romantic, possessing both softness and strength. All women should be able to relate to it.” While incorporating lingerie details and delicate frills, he creates elegant clothing through couture techniques. This approach to dressmaking is garnering attention today.
“Currently, at our Paris boutique, we create semi-couture pieces for a select clientele. Couture is essential for honoring the achievements of artisans with superb craftsmanship and ensuring their continuation. A brand doesn't necessarily need to connect with the masses. I would love to realize a couture collection someday.”
