A Mod Coat Merging Mode and Military Functionality
For its 30th anniversary in the AW21 season, beauty : beast, which ceased operations in 2000 and was rebooted last year, is releasing a collaborative item with Japanese designer brand The Viridi-anne.
Reimagined with a Modern Interpretation
beauty : beast started in 1991 and is a globally active brand, primarily known for its runway collections.
Although the brand announced a halt in operations in 2000, it resumed activities in 2020. This year, marking its 30th anniversary, it has announced the release of a collaborative item with Japanese designer brand The Viridi-anne.
The collaboration came about naturally when designers Yamashita and Okawa, head of The Viridi-anne, who had known each other since the early 90s, reconnected after about 20 years. Among their shared visions, the mod coat from beauty : beast emerged as the item they both envisioned.
The original model's unique bottle pocket, capable of holding multiple wine bottles inside, and its timeless design were the inspiration. Okawa redesigned the fabric, details, and silhouette, rebuilding it as a modernized, fashion-forward piece.
The outer shell is made from a water-repellent material by the Italian company Olmetex. It has a moist, elegant texture with a cotton-like feel, and its inherent military sensibility results in a sophisticated yet compelling finish.
The lining attached to the body uses Thinsulate. While retaining the original model's detachable hood, chest and back shirring, voluminous hem, and distinctive elbow silhouette, the body has been updated to a modern, relaxed fit.
The shirring incorporates The Viridi-anne's signature elastic cord for adjustable fit. Additionally, the hood is designed in the style of the pilot cap with a mask, an iconic element from The Viridi-anne's AW21 collection, further highlighting the collaborative nature of the item.
This item will be produced in the limited quantities characteristic of beauty : beast's recent style. This mod coat, a testament to the craftsmanship of two veteran designers active since the early 90s, is a profound creation.
