A Tora-san look with a knit skirt folded in half to resemble a belly warmer!
—What is the theme/concept for the 2013 Spring/Summer collection?
It's "EDOMAE TRAD / Edo-style Tradition."
—Please tell us about the theme/concept.
We refined the "Edo-chic" learned from Tora-san, the theme of the previous season (2012-13 Autumn/Winter), and combined it with modern traditional and basic elements.
Aiming for fashion originating from Tokyo to take another step forward, we express fashion a step ahead, based on vibrant, fresh tradition, in the Edo-style manner of beautiful people, which is based in Tokyo today.
—What are the key looks (coordinations)?
It's a Tora-san look (bottom center) featuring a tattersall check jacket and pants set-up with a loose shirt, and a knit skirt folded in half to resemble a belly warmer. In the 2013 Pre-Spring collection, we expressed this for women, and for the show, we had men wear it, appearing to the theme song of "Tora-san."
—What are the key items?
We've incorporated Edo elements into tradition, such as a trench coat, suitable for rain, that mimics tortoiseshell, even expressing its transparency, and a unique "haragake" (belly band) vest, created by combining a classic kid mohair three-piece suit vest with the "haragake" from Edo-period festival attire. We've also paid attention to accessories, crafting the snake-skin sandals favored by Tora-san in pop and colorful snake skin.
—What are the key colors?
We're using Edo's basic colors of navy, brown, and gray as a base, but we believe the accent colors, such as the colorful snake-skin sandals and the foil or aluminum prints expressing the shimmering scales of kohada (gizzard shad) from Edo-style sushi, will stand out. We're also proposing white, like Japanese paper, as a key color. We think the natural white of Japanese paper knits, twisted like paper cords, and paper woven on wool looms will look beautiful in the Japanese summer!
—Which designers/brands are you paying attention to?
Celine. I think their uncompromising approach to creation is incredibly cool.
—Do you have a message for your fans?
Don't just go by the initial impression; please try on beautiful people clothing at least once! I believe you'll feel the overwhelming attention to detail in the patterns and materials!
