Collaboration with Sunglasses Brand "THINGLASS" | Araoka Glasses

ARAOKA GLASSES

Featuring Lenses That Defined the 1980s

Araoka Glasses has been remarkably active. Beyond operating eyewear boutiques "Blink Gaienmae" and "Blink Base," last year they released "Elder_ARAOKAGANKYO," a commemorative model for their 77th anniversary, with designer Koichi Futamata. In early 2018, they launched souvenir brand "Shin Yoshiwara" and sold colored lens cloths. This month, on the 1st, they opened "RUTTEN_," a cafe in Okachimachi, their ancestral home. Now, they are collaborating with sunglass brand "THINGLASS" to release a limited edition special model, "#TOKI_TA01."

"THINGLASS" is a brand specializing in sunglasses, launched in 2016. The brand director, Tomoatsu Tsutsumi, is also the third-generation owner of "OMG," a leading Japanese optical glass manufacturer founded in 1943, specializing in glass lenses. Tsutsumi blends modern sensibilities with the technology of functional glass, developing and manufacturing "thin, light glass lenses with various optical properties" daily. To convey these properties, he started "THINGLASS" as a personal project. The frame design is handled by Ikuya Enomoto, a representative designer in the Japanese eyewear industry.

For this collaboration, the clear frame of "THINGLASS's" popular "TOKI" model features OMG's "All Weather Rose" lens color. "All Weather Rose" was developed over approximately five years in the 1970s by the late Masami Tsutsumi, founder of "OMG." Following the coloring techniques of traditional Edo Kiriko cut glass, "gold" is incorporated into the glass material, creating a delicate and beautiful pink hue. This color is not only suitable for all weather conditions but also cuts wavelengths that cause glare to the human eye, leading to its widespread use in ski sunglasses during the 1980s. It reportedly achieved an annual sales record of 300,000 pairs.

Release Date: Valentine's Day. Limited to 20 pairs.

The collaboration began when Toshiyuki Araoka of Araoka Glasses was captivated by the color of "All Weather Rose." After hearing about its background and benefits from Mr. Tsutsumi, they engaged in discussions about what kind of sunglasses would be fitting for this lens.

The clear color (transparent) was chosen for its ability to "enhance the lens color while preventing the frame color from interfering with the lens color when light hits it." These sunglasses, a response from the present to the passion of their predecessors, are a limited edition of just 20 pairs. They will be released on February 14th.
