The highly anticipated collaboration's second act is revealed
Flaph, which reportedly means “cotton dust” in British slang, is the brainchild of designer Teruki Tatsuki. Tatsuki gained experience working at Slam City Skates, a skate shop in London. This was a shop that not only carried original items but also early on featured brands like Holmes, the precursor to the highly popular Silas, thus supporting the nascent London street and fashion culture. It was a place frequented by artists, designers, and other key figures essential to the London scene at the time. Flaph, it is said, was born from absorbing the atmosphere of that era and expressing it all in Tokyo.
It is this very flaph that has captured the attention of our familiar select shop, BARNEYS NEWYORK. Captivated by the brand’s playful yet stylish sensibility, they began carrying it from the Autumn/Winter 2010 season. Amidst the luxury and domestic brands lining their shelves, flaph has carved out a distinct and growing presence. The culmination of this relationship was the first collaborative item launched in the Autumn/Winter 2011 season. These exclusive pieces, an arrangement of flaph’s signature shirts infused with ideas from both parties, generated buzz not only in BARNEYS NEWYORK stores but also across various media outlets.
Amidst this excitement, the second installment has arrived swiftly. It has been available since Saturday, March 17th, at four BARNEYS NEWYORK stores: Shinjuku, Yokohama, Ginza, and Kobe. This collaboration builds upon the previous shirts, incorporating subtle updates. Its charm lies in its basic taste with a touch of playfulness.
The most significant difference lies in the material. While the previous collection used standard oxford cloth, this iteration features the high-tech Kanoko Coolmax fabric. This material, with its excellent water repellency and breathability, ensures a comfortable feel without stickiness, whether you encounter light rain or perspire heavily. It is truly a hybrid shirt, embodying practicality.
Despite its advanced functionality, the design remains simple and playful. A nod to Tatsuki’s second home, the UK, is evident in the Union Jack motif embroidery, while the tricolor accents on the sleeve ribs and the grosgrain tape inside the placket add a distinctive touch.
Once you hold it, you’ll understand why BARNEYS NEWYORK has taken notice of flaph. This functional shirt, a fusion of street sensibility and sartorial elegance, is a must-see.
