A Notable Brand in American Authentic Trad

2011 Autumn/Winter Collection

J.Crew was founded in New York in 1983. Initially, it operated as a mail-order business, but in 1989, it opened its first physical store at South Street Seaport in New York. Since then, it has evolved into a brand of authentic American casual wear, expanding to numerous shops. The company has seen several designers come and go, each bringing innovation. The 2011 Autumn/Winter collection has garnered high praise from industry insiders and is generating significant attention. We are pleased to present the lookbook and behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot!

The current head designer for the men's team is Frank Muytjens, a veteran with eight years of experience as Design Director of Outerwear at Polo Ralph Lauren. This season, Muytjens and his team have drawn inspiration from the iconic works of early 20th-century photographer Lewis Hine, specifically images of machinists, their supervisors, and riveting machinery.
Hine was a photographer who focused on impoverished communities and child laborers in America, advocating for social reform through his work. The functional designs and the rough, textured feel of the materials are directly inspired by Hine's photographs, and these elements have been incorporated into suits and more formal designs. By deliberately incorporating tastes that contrast with American trad, Muytjens achieves a modernism that is both universal and unique.

Several keywords define this collection: Harris Tweed, worsted wool, buckle-back trousers, variations of navy, denim crafted from dressy materials, and clean, tailored silhouettes. The essence of the early 1900s is present, lending a fresh impression.

Furthermore, one of Muytjens' notable achievements is his collaboration with established brands. The shoes co-created with Crockett & Jones and Alden are finished to perfection, earning universal acclaim.

J.Crew has also gained attention for nurturing prominent designers such as Tim Hamilton and Todd Snyder. This season's collection reaffirms J.Crew's pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of American authentic trad.
