Master the Whisky Polish to Transform Tedious Shoe Care

The "Malt Dressing" (or malt finish) recommended by Scotch Grain is the brand's proprietary finishing method, involving the careful application of oil-based cream, thinned with whisky, over an extended period.

The model in the photograph uses calf leather tanned by TANNERIE D’ANNONEY, utilizing high-quality spring water from the region of Annonay in central-western France, an area surrounded by mountains and blessed with mineral-rich water.

This calf leather, crafted using traditional techniques passed down since the 13th century alongside modern tanning machinery, is known for its durable quality and unique texture. Its ability to retain the leather's natural feel while deepening in luster with care is highly praised, leading many renowned brands in France and around the world to use it.

To briefly explain Malt Dressing: first, dust off the shoes with a brush, wrap a cloth around your finger, apply a thin layer of oil-based shoe cream all over to create a base shine.

Once applied, place a small amount of whisky on the cream's lid and slightly dampen the cloth tightly wrapped around your index and middle fingers with the whisky. With this, lightly pick up some cream and remove excess whisky and cream with the other hand, ensuring no water droplets form when applying to the shoe.

Next, gently stroke the entire shoe in a circular motion with the cloth. Alternate between shoes while drying, the key is to create a thin film. After layering the cream sufficiently, let it dry for about 15 to 30 minutes. Finally, lightly polish the entire shoe with a pair of old stockings to achieve a shine like new.

On the day of the event, March 28th (Saturday), Mr. Masakazu Hirokawa, President of Hirokawa Seika Co., Ltd., will conduct the Malt Dressing demonstration. Those who purchase Scotch Grain shoes on the same day will receive a complimentary mini bottle of whisky. Witness the "seeing is believing" effect of the malt finish for yourself.
