Nike collaborated with Stéphane Ashpool, designer of the "Pigalle" brand and also known as a member of the creative collective "P.A.P.," to create a collection that symbolizes a real basketball lifestyle. The collection features two versions of the Nike Air Force 1 HI and LOW, along with an apparel collection including two types of tank tops, two types of shorts, and one type each of a cap and a ball.
The NIKE x PPP collection builds on Nike and P.A.P.'s decade-long relationship, expressing Paris's creative spirit in sportswear. Inspired by the worn surfaces of courts and rusted metal hoops weathered by wind and rain, the collection incorporates elements like gloss finishes and tie-dye treatments to add a nuanced, lived-in aesthetic.
Stéphane Ashpool, Designer of "Pigalle," Shares His Insights
The Nike Air Force 1 HI and LOW, icons of Nike, are crafted from premium leather. Utilizing techniques inspired by brogue shoes, excess padding has been removed, and accents of leather laces and oversized gold eyelets lend a rugged, workwear boot impression. The leather features a wax finish, allowing it to develop a unique patina that reflects the wearer's individual style over time.
Stéphane Ashpool, a founding member of PPP and the designer of Pigalle, is a former professional basketball player and currently coaches his own basketball team. "The Nike Air Force 1 and I were born in the same year, 1982. That small detail is one of the reasons I like it. I wanted to express this shoe in a vibrant form. I aimed to create a story that unfolds with wear, combining the patina developed through use, the dyeing techniques, and the materials themselves to achieve a sense of actual wear," he explains.
Furthermore, the apparel collection is designed with the assumption that the crew will be playing games. Ashpool elaborates, "We've given the shorts a shorter cut for a handmade, old-school feel. Comfort was prioritized, and the pieces are based on the everyday wear we use ourselves."
The two-tone black and white basketball incorporates an optical illusion design, making the ball appear to change color as it spins in the air during a game. The cap, featuring an embroidered PPP logo with a single 'P' enclosed in a diamond, symbolizes the ultimate emblem of a community united by sport.
