AIR: Expressing the Pinnacle of Footwear Innovation and Style

Nike's signature "AIR" has been an inseparable part of the brand for nearly 30 years. The masterpiece known as "AIR MAX" was born on March 26, 1987, and since then, it has continuously spawned a royal family of sneakers such as AIR MAX LIGHT, AIR MAX BW, AIR MAX 90, AIR MAX 93, AIR MAX 95, AIR MAX 97, AIR MAX 360, and more recently, AIR MAX LUNAR 90, always presenting a fresh image.

Nike's air cushioning, which literally featured a "window" in the sole, revealing what was normally hidden, became indispensable to the design of Nike running shoes thereafter. This project began ten years before the first model's release, when Nike founder Phil Knight saw a prototype running shoe with embedded air bags, developed by aerospace engineer Frank Rudy.

After numerous trials and errors, Rudy's concept was adopted in the 1978 "AIR TAILWIND." While this concept revolutionized the world of running, it wasn't until about a decade later that it gained widespread recognition.

The inspiration came from renowned footwear designer Tinker Hatfield's idea: "If we cut out a part of the midsole, expose the airbag from there, and make it visible from the outside, won't everyone notice the air?" The current Nike CEO, Mark Parker, and Hatfield created prototypes and samples. Thus, the AIR MAX 1, a fusion of originality and style, was finally born.
