JAMA RICO | Spring/Summer 2014 Collection

JAMA RICO

“Every day is a new day” is a line from Hemingway’s masterpiece, The Old Man and the Sea.

This season’s theme is “Every day is a new day”

“This season, inspired by Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, the collection is themed ‘Every day is a new day,’” says Satoru Kano, designer of JAMA RICO. The styling, with its Cuban flair, is refreshingly new.

Shot on film, emphasizing natural light and texture

What is the theme/concept for the Spring/Summer 2014 collection?

This season’s collection draws inspiration from the protagonist of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, the setting of Cuba, and Hemingway himself. Specifically, we have accessories inspired by the old man’s fishing hooks, colors inspired by cars in Cuba, and oversized pants reminiscent of what Hemingway himself might have worn.

What were the key points and what should people pay attention to in this season’s lookbook shoot?

For this shoot, we deliberately cast an elderly model to reflect the theme. While not our usual target demographic, we are satisfied with the more mature image it created.

Additionally, we shot on film, emphasizing natural light and texture.

What are the differences in styling, silhouette, and color compared to last year’s Spring/Summer collection?

Last season’s collection focused on cleanly interpreting the brand’s strength in native aesthetics, featuring a relatively slim silhouette and primarily navy colors.

This season, with a greater emphasis on seasonality, we’ve opted for a looser silhouette, with off-white and ecru as primary colors, and extensive use of linen.

What are the key looks (outfits) for this season?

We have a look featuring a relaxed, long linen shirt, akin to pajamas, paired with denim, and another look that’s a set-up of our signature denim, finished in white. Both represent our brand’s fresh take on summer.

Extensive use of fabrics woven in Japan from European linen

What are the key items and key colors?

The key items are from a series using striped linen (shirts, long shirts, cardigans). These are perfect for summer, crafted from high-quality European linen woven with Japan’s advanced techniques.

The key color is off-white, specifically a sophisticated, muted tone rather than a stark white.

What materials did you focus on this season?

Linen. We’ve extensively used elegant, soft linen fabrics woven in Japan from European yarns, sourced from reliable textile manufacturers.
