An Enduring Masterpiece, Over 40 Years in the Making
In 1971, Stan Smith, a rising young American tennis player, achieved victory at the US Open and the Davis Cup, followed by a Wimbledon win the next year. To honor his achievements, the "Stan Smith" was born as a tennis shoe in 1973.
With his face adorning the tongue, the simple white leather silhouette became a street favorite from its debut, cementing its status as adidas's best-selling shoe of all time.
In 1997, various iterations emerged, including the "Stan Smith Comfort," which dominated Japanese fashion media. The product lineup expanded, gaining popularity on the streets and establishing it as a staple in the lifestyle category.
The relaunched Stan Smith retains its original design, now crafted from premium leather. The slender silhouette, soft white leather lining, signature perforated three stripes, and white rubber sole exude a fresh feel. These elements are carried over to this model as a classic icon of "adidas Originals."
Join the "Stan Yourself" Twitter Campaign
To commemorate the relaunch of the Stan Smith, adidas Originals will launch the "Stan Yourself" Twitter campaign in mid-January (planned). Participants who tweet with the keywords "#StanSmith" and "@adiOriginals_jp" along with their own photo will be entered into a drawing to win an illustration of their face on a Stan Smith tongue.
Details will be announced in early January (planned) on the official adidas Originals blog (http://adidas.jp/originals/blog/) and the official adidas Originals Twitter account (https://twitter.com/adiOriginals_jp).
