A Look Back at Woolrich, America's Oldest Outdoor Brand

The original Arctic Parka, released in 1972. At the time, it featured a generous width to accommodate layering.
The story began in 1830 when John Rich II, an English immigrant, established America's first wool mill. Initially, he sold fabrics from a horse-drawn carriage, eventually developing his own products like socks and blankets. During the Civil War, Woolrich manufactured blankets for the Union Army, and subsequently introduced many new products, including hunting jackets and pants. World War II brought immense demand to Woolrich's factories, solidifying its reputation as "the most reliable company capable of integrated production from raw materials (wool) to finished goods" in American society. Woolrich grew into a brand representing America. The iconic "red x black" Buffalo Check, synonymous with American patterns, was originally developed by Woolrich to prevent friendly fire among hunters and remains a beloved brand icon today.
Its historical bestseller is the "Arctic Parka." Developed in 1972 for pipeline construction in the harsh Alaskan environment, this down jacket was designed to withstand temperatures of minus 40°C. It quickly became popular and has been a cherished masterpiece among outdoorsmen across America. In recent years, the "Arctic Parka" has achieved great success not only in America but also in Italy, a fashion capital.
And this autumn, in the special year of its 180th anniversary, the "Arctic Parka" has been renewed for the first time in 38 years, giving birth to two "New Arctic Parkas." Notably, there are virtually no changes to the design. The amount of down and the pattern have been adjusted, and the choice between long and short lengths now offers an optimal balance for town use.
Pictured is the shorter "New Arctic Parka Short." Its versatility, suitable for both on and off-duty occasions, is captivating. The exquisite sizing, which complements Japanese physiques and heights, is something you should experience firsthand. This timeless new masterpiece is a lifelong investment piece that every man should own. Arctic Parka: ¥89,250
