First Picks for Men's Shoes: Spring/Summer 2014 Report

With Christmas past, it's time to look ahead to the trends of the Spring/Summer 2014 season. Before the clothing trends, we want to get a head start on footwear and bags. We asked Yusuke Shibasaki, buyer for Hankyu Men's shoe department, about the "shoes men should buy first in 2014."

Focusing on design, manufacturing, and materials that leverage each factory's strengths

"The men's shoe floor on the B1 level of Hankyu Men's Tokyo features prestigious brands such as long-established British shoemakers with over 100 years of history and Italian factory brands. Additionally, we are focusing on developing our own Hankyu original brands, for which we personally visit European factories to place orders," says buyer Shibasaki.

Regarding the designs we carry, "While it's difficult to generalize, we carefully select and offer designs, manufacturing methods, and materials that leverage each factory's strengths. Our price range is wide, from the 20,000 yen range to over 200,000 yen."

In terms of current trends, "With the increasing popularity of suits for business wear, the dominance of round toes seen in recent years is subsiding, and models with slightly longer lasts (shoe trees) and a glossy finish are gaining popularity. For casual wear, loafers and driving shoes continue to be popular. And at Hankyu Men's, we are paying attention to room shoes," he notes.

For Spring/Summer 2014, he is "paying attention to the men's collection from Sartore, a popular French boot brand with immense popularity in women's fashion," and recommends the brand's iconic Jodhpur boots again this season.

Brift H

Once you buy shoes, learn how to care for them

The secrets of shoe polishing, taught by Brift H

"We are allies of your shoes."says Yuya Hasegawa, the head of Brift H, who expertly polishes shoes and handles shoe-shining events for Tod's and Gucci at Hankyu Men's Tokyo. When asked for tips on shoe care, he reveals his secrets: "Since I want to wear good leather shoes for a long time, it's important to provide them with sufficient nourishment. Properly using a cleaner and consistently applying cream to nourish the leather, keeping it supple, is the basic approach."

Shoe polishing, repair, and restoration for cracks and scratches – leave it all to us

Yuya Hasegawa, who runs the shoe lounge "Brift H" in Aoyama, started polishing shoes on the streets of Tokyo and Shinagawa stations at the age of 20. Initially self-taught, he recalls, "As I polished shoes based on customer requests and saw the work of other shoe shiners, I realized what an incredible world it was and began studying it seriously."

He then opened his current shop in June 2008. When asked why he chose Aoyama, he replied, "I chose Aoyama as a destination to encourage people to make a special trip, aiming to change the perception of shoe shining. I wanted to foster a culture of shoe care."

The name Brift H comes from 'Brift,' an abbreviation for 'brighten footwear,' and 'H,' representing the initials of concepts like HAPPY, HANDMADE, HOME (where tired shoes return), and HOSPITAL. "Today, I will lecture on the general care methods for common leather, suede, and exotic leathers," says Hasegawa.

The true joy of shoe polishing is "nurturing your shoes."

The basic approach to leather shoe care, regardless of material, is "to remove dirt, replenish nourishment, and finally polish with wax." He likens it to, "When a woman wakes up in the morning, she washes her face, tones her skin with lotion and moisturizer, and then applies foundation."

"The key for all leather shoes is to wear them regularly. If you cherish them too much and keep them stored away in a shoe closet, they can develop mold or cracks. So, wearing them frequently is essential. As a guideline for care, if you wear them once a week, care for them once every two months; if you wear them two to three times a week, aim for once a month. The important point in shoe care is not to try to restore them to their original state, but to respect their individuality as they are worn, polished, and develop creases. This respect fosters attachment. Our job is to help you bring out the character of your shoes."

Even if you're not keen on shoe polishing, starting by gathering shoe care tools with the mindset of "nurturing your shoes" can be a good approach. This can become a uniquely masculine way to enjoy shoe care.
