BURNER | 2013-14 Autumn/Winter Collection
BURNER
This season's theme is "THE STREET STANDARD." Wear what you truly love on the streets and in the city.
Clothing that transcends the conventional image evoked by the words.
"We wanted to evoke the streets and cities where we live, so we deliberately used a gray background and had the models imagine cityscapes while shooting. We hope you can envision your own cityscape against the gray backdrop," says Yoshio Hatanaka, designer of "BURNER." He explains, "These are items that look ordinary yet are somehow different. They have impact, but upon closer inspection, they can be incorporated into your everyday wardrobe. We focused on subtle nuances in how they look and are presented for this latest collection."

Clothing is incomplete on its own; "STREET STANDARD" by BURNER offers the solution.
—What is the theme/concept for the 2013-14 Autumn/Winter collection?
In "STREET," we've captured the original meaning of "streets" and "city." In "STANDARD," we've infused the concept of "originality" and "classic." Clothing that transcends the conventional image evoked by the words.—This is BURNER's "STREET STANDARD."
—Please explain the theme in more detail.
I believe clothing is incomplete on its own. It is completed when it harmonizes with the wearer's character and the scene. When we admire European or American styles, it's not just the jackets and pants, but also their demeanor and the cityscapes that form their backdrop. ITALIAN, FRENCH, BRITISH, AMERICAN... styles are cool precisely because they blend with the respective races and landscapes. We want to wear what we truly love on the streets and in the cities where we live. This is the "streetwear = STREET STANDARD" that embodies that desire.
—What are the key looks (coordinations) for this season?
All the looks are our recommended coordinations. Among them, the coordination in the photo above uses original jacquard material, making it one of our highlights. Separately, items like the trench coats, pea coats, and blazers in the looks are traditional pieces, but we believe the key looks are those that showcase new facets of established items and designs that offer a different breadth of expansion.
—What are the key items and key colors?
Imagining the current streets of Japan, I feel a sense of speed, smartness, and functionality. Within this context, the essential elements for this season's theme are Lightness, Uniqueness, and Softness.
For "Lightness," we've created a new classic pea coat using shirt fabric and padding for a lightweight finish, expressing a sense of agility that matches the flow of time.
For "Uniqueness," the panel V-neck cutsew enriches the expression of basic items through patterned designs and fabric switching, creating a synergistic effect by adding a pop of atmosphere to the functional cityscape.
For "Softness," we've improved the lining material used for 60/40 cloth outerwear. By weaving wool on the surface and polyester yarn on the reverse, the blazer is fluffy on the outside and firm on the inside, expressing the soft aspect of the Japanese people.
And there are three colors that symbolize the collection. We propose these not as specific colors, but as color tones, aiming for depth in styling.
"White to Beige" is a color palette we're trying for the first time in an Autumn/Winter collection, adding a sense of lightness to rugged or earthy items. This is a proposal for white to beige as everyday wear, not as a prim and proper white.
"Orange to Red" is often used as an accent, but by considering it within a broader spectrum from orange to red, we've made it easier to incorporate into outfits. This color palette, with its subtle softness, exudes a sense of allure.
"Blue to Black" offers a color tone that conveys both freshness and an edge. BURNER always releases blue to black each season, but this time, we've focused more strongly on matching Japanese skin tones.
—What "materials" did you focus on this season?
It's the original jacquard explained in the key look above. We mixed patterns with completely opposite backgrounds: a cheerful aloha and a military-style camouflage. The original pattern, expressing BURNER's "playfulness," was woven not by Hataya, a jacquard specialist, but by Hataya, a renowned Japanese denim manufacturer. This allowed us to express a desirable roughness and masculine feel, enabling us to propose it as casual wear.
—What is the most rewarding aspect of being a designer?
Above all, I do it because I love creating things, whether it's clothing or anything else. When I can talk with people who share my sensibilities at exhibitions or in stores, it motivates me to work even harder on the next collection.
