Nigel Cabourn, whose "Eddie Bauer x Nigel Cabourn" collection, a revival of precious archives stored by Eddie Bauer U.S.A. arranged in the Nigel Cabourn style, has also been a topic of conversation. This time, the Munson boots, their first collaboration with Red Wing, have been released.

Nigel Cabourn's Discovery Sparked the Collaboration

The inspiration for this collaboration with Red Wing began when Nigel discovered vintage British Army combat boots from World War I. Found in excellent condition, remarkable for their 100-year age, the boots captured Nigel Cabourn's imagination, strengthening his desire to recreate them as contemporary footwear.

He believed that Red Wing was the only manufacturer capable of creating a shoe that maximized the inherent merits of those boots, and their mutual respect, combined with Nigel's passion, became the driving force behind this first collaboration.

The primary feature of these Munson boots is the revival of the Munson last (wooden mold), which Red Wing had phased out after the late 1960s. The Munson last was developed in 1912 by Dr. Munson, who was a professor of military hygiene at the Army School in Washington, for infantry boots. He spent four years examining the feet of approximately two thousand soldiers and investigating the fit of thousands of pairs of shoes to perfect this last. It was subsequently adopted as the standard last for military boots and is still used in some military boots today.

Red Wing's Potential Meets Nigel's Aesthetic Sensibility

The most distinctive characteristic of the Munson last is its toe shape, designed to follow the alignment of the toes. This last, which swells significantly from the center of the toe area towards the big toe, does not constrict the front of the foot, thus preventing ailments like bunions and hammer toes, which are often caused by ill-fitting shoes. The design also considered making the shoes lighter.

Furthermore, the Munson boots feature a lining of army green Harris Tweed selected by Nigel Cabourn, and the midsole utilizes full-vegetable-tanned leather originally made for the outsole. For the upper leather, rough-out leather, rich in oil, was chosen for its similarity to the vintage British Army boots owned by Nigel.

These Munson boots are a masterful expression of Red Wing's potential, brought forth by Nigel. We invite you to experience the charm of a last meticulously designed for both the protection of soldiers' feet and the functional demands of the battlefield.
