The star of Prada’s Fall/Winter 2016 Menswear Advertising Campaign is actor Eddie Redmayne. The visuals, shot by Craig McDean, evoke 19th-century Neoclassical paintings. Against neutral grey or deep crimson backgrounds divided by the idealized landscapes of Romanticism, Redmayne embodies multiple roles: the “hero,” the “villain,” and the “revolutionary.”
His resolute, sculptural poses reflect the grand collections of museums that have shaped historical and cultural memory, as well as the mannerisms of protagonists depicted in epic literature. Collectively, the visuals express a “modern masculinity” that blends worldly journeys with bold self-awareness and ambiguous, individualistic thought.
Redmayne, who takes the lead role here, has received a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award for his performance in the stage play “Red,” and an Academy Award for Best Actor for the film “The Theory of Everything” and was nominated for “The Danish Girl,” establishing him as one of contemporary cinema’s most prominent actors. Later this year, he will star in J.K. Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” Though he has limited modeling experience, the visuals showcase his stylish, masculine appeal, making it hard to believe.
