New Brand "THE BARRACKS" Debuts

A new eyewear brand, "THE BARRACKS," has been launched through a collaboration between Jay Sabatino, a fashion designer active in New York and Tokyo; Hiroyuki Matsui, buyer for the men's division at Beauty&Youth UNITED ARROWS; and Tetsuya Okada, representative of GLOBE SPECS.

Vintage Military Eyewear with a Modern Sensibility

Regarding the launch of this new brand, Tetsuya Okada of GLOBE SPECS commented, "It started with a conversation with Jay Sabatino, who has been a customer at our store for a long time. We found we had similar tastes in clothes and glasses, and thought, 'Let's create something together.' Then, Mr. Matsui, the men's buyer from Beauty&Youth with whom we've been planning eyewear collections, joined us. The concept is to create eyewear that we ourselves want to wear, regardless of trends."

The eyewear from THE BARRACKS is based on vintage glasses that the U.S. military issued to soldiers. The design sources for each model span a range of glasses from that era, from those used by newly enlisted soldiers to those favored by veteran officers.

"We've gone to great lengths to meticulously recreate the military glasses of the 1950s and 60s," says Mr. Okada. "To capture the roundness of the plastic frames from that era, we had artisans file them by hand. We even sought out pads made from old resin, similar to Bakelite pads. For the decorative pins that secure the hinges on the frame surface, we found deadstock hardware. For the lenses, to achieve the specific color tones and unique luster, we're using glass lenses (with reinforced treatment), which are rarely used today and difficult to find."

The cases are also designed with a military aesthetic, crafted to resemble the fabric of MA-1 jackets with pen pockets. Naturally, the lining is emergency orange. A cleaning cloth featuring playful illustrations is also included.

"This collection was created by three enthusiasts who share a passion, so within the subtle vintage feel, you'll find abundant, meticulously crafted details," Mr. Okada states with confidence in the finished product.
