Collaboration with ZANTER, Japan's first downwear brand

This season's downwear: Mode meets Sporty (1)

The fusion of mode and sport is gaining increasing attention. Onitsuka Tiger × Andrea Pompilio, which debuted in Spring/Summer 2013, is precisely a leading brand in this genre. Their runway shows, always meticulously crafted, continue to capture attention and set the brand apart. This Autumn/Winter is no exception, thanks to a collaboration with ZANTER, Japan's first downwear brand, resulting in a collection of downwear.

A manufacturer that has continuously supplied wear to Antarctic expeditions

ZANTER, established in 1951, is Japan's first downwear brand. It has supplied downwear to Japanese expedition teams from the first Antarctic expedition in 1956 to the 56th in 2014. The company has also officially provided downwear to numerous expeditions in the Himalayas, Everest, and the Matterhorn. The fact that this manufacturer has been supplying wear—upon which lives depend in extreme conditions—for over 60 years speaks volumes about its exceptional quality.

But why did Onitsuka Tiger × Andrea Pompilio turn their attention to ZANTER this time? It turns out that when ZANTER supplied downwear to the first Antarctic expedition, it was Onitsuka Tiger itself that provided the insulated boots. Designer Andrea Pompilio, aiming to create "essential and authentic downwear" for the 2015-16 Autumn/Winter collection, learned of this historical connection. This naturally led to the current collaboration. While Onitsuka Tiger × Andrea Pompilio is known for its contemporary, edgy, and fashion-forward aesthetic, it also upholds fundamental quality. This is precisely what captivates both the viewer and the wearer.

Authentic yet fashionable: a design balance not to be missed

The downwear itself is remarkably excellent. For instance, put on this down jacket over a light knit, and you'll soon feel a gentle warmth spreading from within. The high thermal insulation is immediately apparent. And for good reason.

While high-quality down is typically rated between 600 and 700 fill power, this collection uses domestically processed down with over 700 fill power, demonstrating a clear difference in quality.

Down jackets of this nature can often appear bulky due to their volume, but the design sensibility here is exceptional.

Instead of forcing a slim silhouette, the design ingeniously leverages the lightness and volume for comfort, while subtle details ensure a contemporary finish. There's a distinct modern sleekness, which broadens the scope for coordination.

The collection features two styles: with and without a hood, each available in black, blue, and red. The cost-performance ratio, considering the quality, is outstanding. While its true appeal might be best understood only when worn, we highly recommend experiencing it firsthand at a store.

Beyond the down collection, a range of standout styles

Naturally, the 2015-16 Autumn/Winter collection from Onitsuka Tiger × Andrea Pompilio also features a rich selection of items beyond the downwear. Launched in 2013, this marks the sixth season. This season's highlight is the contrast within a monochrome palette.

The inspiration stems from the underground atmosphere of the 1990s, a period when Andrea Pompilio spent his formative years. It was also a time of transition from boyhood to manhood for him. The collection's primary colors, black and contrasting hues, express the complex era characterized by a blend of the unique adolescent darkness and joy – a "dark & fun" duality.

Trend items filtered through a unique lens

This season sees the emergence of many items reminiscent of the 90s, such as MA-1 jackets, wool jackets styled like coach jackets, and mod coats, all hitting peak trend. Each piece, however, has been reinterpreted through Andrea Pompilio's distinct filter, updated into a new image. While the design is minimal and stoic, primarily in monochrome, it consistently retains the brand's signature touch and a contemporary sensibility. The brand's skillful balance in this regard is truly remarkable.

A reimagined sneaker collection

Furthermore, the sneakers are a major highlight. This season introduces shoes entirely designed by Andrea Pompilio himself. By overseeing everything from the sole to the upper, he has created a collection distinctly different from previous Onitsuka Tiger footwear. This marks a significant turning point for the brand, with future developments eagerly anticipated.

From essential downwear for winter to trendy 90s-inspired pieces and a newly evolved shoe collection, this season's Onitsuka Tiger × Andrea Pompilio is packed with highlights. The lineup fully conveys the joy of fashion. These items seem to echo the designer's message: fashion should be enjoyed more simply and freely. We encourage you to experience these pieces firsthand and feel their essence.
