Introducing 'MICK,' a Fictional Musician!

The brand name, 'Dartin Bonaparto,' is inspired by 'd'Artagnan,' a legendary figure from The Three Musketeers, and 'Napoleon Bonaparte,' the formidable French emperor. Brand Director Inoue launched the brand in the Autumn/Winter 2007 season.

Initially, the brand drew its roots from the Denain region of France, focusing on denim—a symbol of the working class—and infusing it with aristocratic luxury. However, the brand's popularity truly ignited with the introduction of its iconic character, 'MICK.'

MICK is a fictional musician who embarks on world tours with his four-piece band. Each season, the collection reflects the fashion, culture, and styles influenced by the locations they visit. MICK's likeness is expressed in various ways through embroidery and prints.

Born in 1976, MICK is the central figure of the band (and brand). He is captivated by 70s rock, blending progressive rock influences with contemporary alternative rock. His personal styling dictates the brand's direction. The band also includes SUZY, the bassist and the sole female member, drummer COZY, and guitarist JEFF.

Swarovski Meets Flawless Silhouette

Beyond MICK's popularity, the brand's signature hooded parka—which Inoue describes as 'the most important design'—is a key item. It features zippers specially ordered from Swarovski and a simple, flattering silhouette. MICK's sequined embroidery on the back adds a touch of glamour, solidifying its status as a comfortable yet luxurious staple.

'To express a simple yet sophisticated fashion sense, we deliberately used Swarovski zippers only on the front zip. These zippers are our exclusive special order, chosen for their length and color. The sequined MICK embroidery requires high technical skill, so all of it is processed domestically.'

Regarding his dedication to patternmaking, Inoue explains, 'Throughout my career, I've worked with numerous menswear brands, including designer labels and British and Italian factory brands. It was during my first brand involvement that I truly understood the importance of silhouette. Alongside constructing silhouettes, I became fascinated by the relationship between the human body's structure, range of motion, and the product's form. This led me to believe that even with jersey materials, a well-defined silhouette could be achieved, and I devised ways to incorporate this into our products.'

The Secret to Its Comfortable Fit

'Many individuals who are lean yet physically fit—what you might call 'slim-fit muscular'—have well-developed arm muscles, allowing for a greater range of motion. That's why we adopted raglan sleeves for ease of arm movement. We've engineered patterns that maintain a clean silhouette, appearing slim-fit while ensuring comfort for the muscles of the shoulders and upper arms.'
'Typically, jersey patterns are made from two pieces—front and back—which can result in a tight silhouette that feels restrictive rather than accentuating the body's natural contours. At Dartin Bonaparto, we create 'side panels' that allow us to construct a silhouette that comfortably follows the body's three-dimensional form,' Inoue elaborates.

While the popular hooded parka is available year-round, the Autumn/Winter collection features best-selling down vests and jackets.
