The "JACK" Hidden Within Three Seemingly Unrelated Designs
“JACK SPADE” began in 1996 on Warren Street in New York. Did you know that the brand name doesn't refer to a real person, but rather a fictional persona?
The "Jack" in Jack Spade is the most common name, evoking a sense of familiarity for everyone in America. It was chosen as the brand name because it was deemed fitting for a brand that is simple, functional, and brings out the wearer's individuality.
Speaking of Jack: Kennedy
The "JACK SPADE for BEAUTY&YOUTH" collaboration features T-shirts and newsboy bags, each with three designs representing a universally known “Jack.” The key illustrations, linking each design, were created by NY-based illustrator Mary Matson.
“Kennedy,” of course, is the president whose name graces NYC’s gateway, JFK Airport. He was affectionately known by the nickname Jack from childhood and was fondly called that by Americans. The illustration uses a logo print of the woman he loved until the end of his short life, as he became the youngest president in history.
Nicholson, Kerouac… and?
“Nicholson” refers to the legendary actor, who holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations for an actor. When one thinks of Nicholson, the logo print features an "axe," an illustration from a film that became his signature work, known for its portrayal of madness.
“Kerouac” is the American novelist who represents the Beat Generation. His seminal work, "On the Road," born from his nomadic journeys, garnered a devoted following among hippies and profoundly influenced musicians like The Doors and Bob Dylan. The logo print features a "cactus," inspired by the imagery of towering cacti depicted in "On the Road."
