Tailoring a Stylish Yukata at a Men's Kimono Tailor

Stylist Tsuyoshi Nimura Proposes New Ways to Wear the Yukata

"We've gathered all of Yamato's expertise in men's kimonos into one place," said Takatoshi Yajima, Chairman of the Board of Kimono Specialty Store Yamato, at the opening of the men's kimono tailor "Y. & SONS" on March 1st. Tsuyoshi Nimura, the store's Buying Director and stylist, has now unveiled visuals showcasing his styling of men's yukata under the concept of "Playing with Tradition."

A Guide to Wearing This Summer's Yukata

Y. & SONS, which opened in March near the torii gate of Kanda Myojin Shrine in Tokyo, presents its latest men's yukata. The store's concept is "Making Japanese Men Look Stylish" and "Kimono Tailor."

Y. & SONS' yukata proposes a modern way of wearing it, much like how sweatpants can be styled for lounging at home or for going out.

Stylist Tsuyoshi Nimura's approach makes the yukata the centerpiece, complemented by accessories from the store such as hats from "KIJIMA TAKAYUKI," shoes from "FOOTSTOCK ORIGINALS," and bags from "WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie," creating a modern arrangement. By reinterpreting conventional styling, the yukata feels more accessible.

Depending on the styling, Y. & SONS' yukata can also be worn like a cotton kimono. Its appeal lies in the traditional techniques, such as the kata-zome, chusen, and ryomen dyeing methods, meticulously selected from across Japan—including Enshu, Kyoto, and Nihonbashi—that bring these garments to life.

This yukata offers a hybrid experience, transcending traditional wear to embody time-honored craftsmanship. Available in a wide range of designs, from chic and understated to bold patterns, these custom-tailored yukata start from ¥29,000 to ¥59,000 (excluding tax, including tailoring costs).
