Two colorways inspired by Parisian clay courts
"NIKECOURT AIR TRAINER 1 MID × FRAGMENT" was born from a collaboration with Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment Design to commemorate a tennis tournament in Paris in early summer 2015. From NikeCourt, which expresses the lifestyle of tennis, shoes finished for off-court wear have arrived.
The first to wear it on the tennis court was the "bad boy" John McEnroe
Released in 1987, the "Nike Air Trainer 1" was designed for gym workouts and created the cross-training shoe category. The year before its release, tennis player John McEnroe wore a prototype on the court, bringing it widespread attention.
McEnroe recalls, "When Nike sent me many prototypes, a worn-out model that wasn't intended for me was mixed in. But it turned out to be a great shoe for me."
McEnroe, ignoring Nike's request not to wear early prototypes of the "Nike Air Trainer 1" during matches, stated, "At that time, I felt so good in them that I said, 'Sorry, but I'm going with these. I have to wear these for this match.'"
Models commemorating tournaments in London and New York are also planned
The Nike Air Trainer 1, with its legacy marked by great tennis players, featured a mid-cut design as a versatile tool for training, an external outrigger, and a strap over the instep. These features, which provided great performance in the gym, supported the legend on the court and paved the way for subsequent tennis shoes.
Going forward, "NIKECOURT AIR TRAINER 1 MID × FRAGMENT" will continue to release a collection commemorating major tennis titles held in London and New York.
