Yoshiyuki Shimazu Unveils a New Realm for Menswear
Giuliano Fujiwara, with Masataka Matsumura as Creative Director, is a brand that has consistently earned a certain reputation in Europe. This collection, reinterpreted through the deep insight of stylist Yoshiyuki Shimazu, captures their avant-garde Spring/Summer offerings.

The Concept: A World Without Gravity
“Nature, through its colors and light, awakens our senses. It is the infinite reflection of light on the sea's surface, the unknown colors of the deep sea's mysteries. When one sinks deep into the abyss, a feeling of liberation from gravity is experienced.”
The key concept for Giuliano Fujiwara this season is “a world without gravity.”
This is expressed through light and soft-touch materials, and colors inspired by the transitions of nature. Furthermore, the geometric patterns that caught the eye on the runway are a superposition of numbers from 1 to 24, suggesting the hours of a day and serving as an allegory for the four-dimensional world of time—a world of weightlessness.
Let's examine the collection from individual aspects.
COLOR
The deep, dark blue of the ocean floor that absorbs even light. The pale blue of the dawn sky as night gives way to day. The white of the clouds floating in that sky. The light gray of the sea reflected by low-hanging clouds. The beige of sand, and the wine red that dyes the horizon as the sun sets.
Colors drawn from nature's constant changes are incorporated throughout.
STYLE
The exploration of new proportions, which began last season, has evolved further.
Shoulder width is reduced, with slightly shorter sleeves. The trousers feature a deeper rise and, like the jackets, are cut shorter. This carefully calculated balance can be said to have established a new proportion emblematic of Giuliano Fujiwara.
MATERIAL
Material selection pursued for silhouette and comfort.
The soft taffeta used for the trousers retains its structure, allowing for shape manipulation. Blended silk adds further elegance. The cotton for the shirts is light, almost like thin gauze.
A lightly constructed mohair-blend wool is used for the handmade jackets. The knit, woven with milk fiber, offers a smoothness that lives up to its imagery.
In high-tech materials, cotton is given a silicone coating, which not only provides waterproofing but also evokes the image of light reflecting on water.
While the brand's strong reputation in Europe is somewhat humbling, amidst a prevalence of brands whose clothing feels less than "real" for a Japanese sensibility, Giuliano Fujiwara exudes a profound universality that transcends such nationalistic considerations. This likely resonates with the "wabi-sabi"—a symbol of Japanese aesthetics that Creative Director Masataka Matsumura frequently references.
This is a brand that commands attention, with expectations for its future endeavors soaring.
