The Perfect Winter Wardrobe, Crafted from Cashmere

“Our customers, accustomed to the lighter jackets of spring and summer, continue to seek out jackets and trousers that are both lightweight and warm, yet still possess a refined appearance. From a Warm Biz perspective, cashmere is the perfect material to meet these demands,” says Kohei Seike, 27, in his second year at BARNEYS NEW YORK, who oversees the suit section.

The Allure of "Premium Cashmere" from Belvest's Gold Label

When asked if business attire is becoming more casual, he replies, “Indeed, from my interactions in the suit section, it’s clear that more customers are opting for suits only when necessary. However, for single-breasted jackets and complementary dress trousers, there’s a greater focus on colors and patterns than before, with items that can be worn both on and off duty becoming increasingly valued.”

Seike believes that material is the most crucial factor for Warm Biz. The Belvest Gold Label cashmere jacket he is wearing today, he says, is a perfect example. “Since Warm Biz is about warding off the cold, a jacket must meet many criteria: it needs to be lightweight, warm, comfortable to wear without restriction, insulating, and visually elegant. This leads us to cashmere. Compared to the trendy country-style fabrics, the material isn't as thick, so many customers comment on how comfortable it is to wear.”

He further adds a touch of seasonal flair with a wool tie and layers a classic cardigan between the jacket and shirt. “Coordinating the cardigan’s color with the jacket creates a harmonious and sophisticated look, completing a more business-oriented style. Alternatively, adding color or pattern to the jacket to evoke a country-like feel can introduce a warm impression.”

When it comes to dressing, Seike admires Masahiro Motoki and Hiroshi Abe. “Motoki not only looks great in suits, but he also adds a unique aura that makes his style distinctive. Abe, too, seems to express his individuality through his suit choices.”

Regarding outerwear that will be popular going forward, he states, “In recent years, shorter coat lengths and functional outerwear with removable liners have been popular. However, this season, classic Chesterfield coats, both domestic and imported, are available. They feature unprecedented sharp designs, offering authentic tailoring that can be worn like a jacket. Their lightness also allows for a sporty finish. Furthermore, many jackets are of an unconstructed type, suitable for wear into spring, enabling a relaxed business style without appearing too formal.”

At BARNEYS NEW YORK, where “comfort is paramount for most customers,” one can enjoy a perfect winter ensemble with their cashmere items.
