CHUNGKAWAI | Clothes That Enhance the Wearer's Individuality
CHUNGKAWAI | CHUNGKAWAI
Incorporating materials used in dresses, we also offer proposals beyond casual wear.
Clothing that enhances the wearer's individuality
For the current season of "CHUNGKAWAI," designer Masayuki Kawai states, "We are using thick fabrics for items made of leather and stretch materials, consciously bringing out the characteristics and presence of the materials." The brand's message is also conveyed through its deliberate choice not to use models, allowing for a more detailed presentation of the clothing's details.

Constructing items while maintaining a functional and solid image
—What is the theme/concept for the 2014-15 Autumn/Winter collection?
Fundamentally, I don't set a theme because I don't want to impose preconceived notions. However, by using materials with a brushed texture, like wool, we construct items while maintaining CHUNGKAWAI's functional and solid image. Furthermore, I always create items with the desire to share the CHUNGKAWAI worldview with as many people as possible. I hope wearers can enjoy their individuality being enhanced. Perhaps a theme emerges only when that sentiment intersects with the times and society.
—What were your priorities for this season's lookbook shoot, and what should people pay attention to?
Continuing from Spring/Summer, for the 2014 collection, we deliberately chose not to use model shots. This was because we wanted to convey the clothing's details more thoroughly. We might use them next time... (laughs).
—What are the differences in styling, silhouette, and color compared to last year's Autumn/Winter collection?
In addition to the popular combination series for pants and shirts, we have enhanced our range of leather items, easy pants, and knitwear. By incorporating materials like SUPER120’s wool, which are typically used for dresses, we are able to offer proposals that go beyond casual wear.
—What are the key items and key colors?
The "combination series" has been part of our collection since the brand's inception, and we've released items with reversible designs and adjustable lapel shapes from the beginning. This season, we've developed a new pattern where a nylon hood transforms into the back lining of a jacket. I believe it's functionally excellent, so I'd like people to see it. Regarding colors, while the palette is centered around the brand's signature black for a chic look, we've introduced colors like red, purple, and green in our cutsews and knits.
—What "materials" were you particular about this season?
The calf leather used for the brand's first leather items.
—What "things, people, or concepts" are you currently paying attention to in the fashion scene?
Conversations with customers and partners in major urban centers like Tokyo serve as a source of inspiration. However, I also want to create opportunities to interact with customers and select shops in regional areas.
—What are your expectations for the web magazine OPENERS (http://openers.jp/)?
Please continue to entertain us with your media, which offers substantial content to read and view, not just in fashion!
