Autumn/Winter Collection: The Art of Layering, Simplified
Exploring the Potential of Modern, New Real Clothes
Proposing contemporary daily wear, born from a fresh perspective that transcends conventional forms.――With a brand concept of “STYLE over FASHION” and “IREGULAR, REGULAR CLOTHING,” Bernabeu draws inspiration from designer Kento Katagiri’s roots in vintage wear, music, and culture. The brand then reconstructs these influences with contemporary essence, incorporating his current style and sensibilities to propose new clothing and new styles.

This Season's Theme: "<UN>REAL"
――What is the theme/concept for the 2014-15 Autumn/Winter collection?
This season's theme is "<UN>REAL." We explore the potential of modern, new real clothes that exist in the "interstice between the unreal and the real," born from applying materials in ways that diverge from their inherent images and stripping away existing details.
――What were your points of focus and what should people pay attention to in this season's look shoot?
We paid close attention to how light hits and enters the garments, ensuring the textures of the materials would come alive.
――What are the differences in styling, silhouette, and color compared to last year's Autumn/Winter collection?
Regarding silhouettes, I don't think there are major changes. As for color, the significant difference from previous seasons is the use of "black" as the main color for the first time in the brand's history, a color I personally hadn't found compelling for several years and thus rarely used.
In terms of styling, we focused on creating a "street feel" that isn't confined to a single genre, and on presenting the layered style, which is a cornerstone of the brand, in a simple manner.
――What is the key look (coordination) for this season?
It's difficult to choose just one, but if I had to pick, it would be this coordination (bottom left photo). It's a very simple combination, yet it evokes a subtle sense of incongruity, reflecting the "interstice between the unreal and the real" aspect of this season's theme.
The Origin of This Season's Theme: "Leather Knit"
――What are the key items and key colors?
The key items are the pullover, cardigan, and pants from the series we call "leather knit." Since we started creating this season's items from these pieces, they are the origin of the season's theme.
As mentioned earlier, the key color is black, used as the main color for the first time in the brand's history.
――What "material" did you focus on this season?
It's the leather knit used in the items mentioned as key items. We bonded a material finished with a leather-like surface texture through circular knitting with a sweat material. However, instead of simple bonding, we went through extensive trial and error, experimenting with the shape of the sheets, the combination of materials, and varying the tension applied to the front and back during adhesion. This allowed us to achieve a surface texture, grain, and wrinkle effect that exceeded my imagination, making it appear like real leather at first glance.
――What "things, people, or items" are you paying attention to in the current fashion scene?
Since what I find new doesn't always emerge from specific things, people, or items, I'm paying attention to the scene as a whole.
――What are your expectations for the web magazine OPENERS (http://openers.jp/)?
It is an honor that OPENERS asks more in-depth questions than other web media, allowing us to strongly showcase the brand's creations. I look forward to continued dissemination of creations that delve into deeper aspects.
