NEON SIGN | This season's proposal: a 'more mess' style.
NEON SIGN
Focus on silhouette, shadow, layering, and vintage x dress styles.
This season's proposal: a 'more mess' style.
This season, we propose a 'more mess' style, interpreting 'messy' as a deliberate disruption within refined beauty. While the collection centers on dress-up, we use accessories to create a sense of disarray," says Asuka Hayashi, designer of NEON SIGN. Pay attention to the coordinated looks that reconstruct the styling balance between dress styles and vintage items.

This season's theme: 'MORE MESS MODE'
—What is the theme/concept for the 2014-15 Autumn/Winter Collection?
This season's theme is 'MORE MESS MODE.' We present a unique style that juxtaposes luxurious Chester coats with distressed denim, incorporating elements like arm warmers (browsing gauntlets) and sleeves intentionally rolled up beyond their usual length. Furthermore, we draw inspiration from the celebrity styles of East Coast rappers, proposing a blend of luxury and messy elements. We are also releasing a vintage series featuring distressed denim, vintage rayon check shirts, and vintage thermal wear, all inspired by the details and materials of used clothing.
—What were the key points and what should we look out for in this season's lookbook shoot?
We want you to focus on the silhouette, shadow, layering, and the combination of vintage and dress styles. From the front, the clothing appears flat and masculine, but it changes when viewed from the side. Therefore, the lookbook shoot was done with an emphasis on the side profile.
—What are the differences in styling, silhouette, and color compared to last year's Autumn/Winter collection?
We have reconstructed the styling balance between dress items and vintage pieces. Rather than clothes that conform to the body's shape, we've used three-dimensional pattern cutting to create variations that enhance the silhouette through draping and shadow. We aimed to create pieces that allow the wearer to enjoy the form of the garment itself.
—What are the key looks (outfits) for this season?
We propose luxurious styles featuring a layered look of a long vintage thermal with an elegant cashmere knit (top left), an elegant shirt made from three-dimensionally cut melton (top right), a relaxed yet elegant sports jacket that allows you to enjoy the garment's form (bottom left), a sweatshirt with dolman sleeves and a circle created by paneling, paired with shoelace belts and slacks (bottom center), and a Chester coat made of shaggy melton paired with a silk wool suit (bottom right).
The latest collection highlights a commitment to materials.
—What are the key items and key colors?
The key items are the Chester coat, the stand-fall collar shirt coat, and the big circle sweatshirt. The key colors are earth tones plus sax.
—What materials did you focus on this season?
We have meticulously crafted all the materials. For dress fabrics, we focused on keywords like luxury and elegance. For vintage-inspired materials, we aimed to perfectly replicate used clothing, so that customers who don't typically wear vintage can experience its appeal in new garments.
The 'Mikado Silk Wool' used for suits and other items is a premium silk wool made with undyed white silk for the warp and top-grey wool for the weft. The use of top-grey melange yarn for the weft creates a subtle, border-like texture. The 'Super120’s Shaggy Melton' used for Chester coats and blousons is a shaggy (brushed) melton woven from the finest worsted wool. Brushing enhances its luster, giving it a dress-like quality. The 'Super140’s Smooth Melton' used for stand-fall collar shirt coats and MA-1 jackets is a cut-and-sew melton knitted from the finest worsted wool. While melton is typically woven, this cut-and-sew construction provides a unique suppleness not found in conventional melton.
The 'Silk Touch Fleece' used for sweatshirts and the big circle sweatshirt is a cotton fleece that achieves a silk-like feel through a proprietary yarn treatment process before knitting. The 'Vintage Rayon Flannel' used for shirts is a deep shadow check, hand-printed with six screens using original brushed rayon, meticulously recreating 1950s check flannel shirts. The 'Vintage Thermal' used for the turtleneck thermal and sweatshirts has undergone a pilling process to enhance its warmth and achieve a vintage look, based on my personal favorite used thermal shirts.
—What are you currently paying attention to in the fashion scene – things, people, or items?
Luxurious and high-quality materials that can differentiate from younger demographics and fit into the street scene.
—What are your expectations for the web magazine OPENERS (http://openers.jp/)?
Regarding manufacturing, I believe that good materials are the foundation for creating good products, regardless of the item.
I would be pleased if you could create topics about 'fabric,' the origin of clothing, and convey the process of fabric creation and its historical context to your readers. Simply presenting a few looks featuring just several types of high-quality fabrics might also be interesting. The excellence of the fabric itself would surely resonate with the readers.
