A Concept Brand from London

2011-12 Autumn/Winter Collection Now Available!

The garbstore, a concept brand with a flagship store in London's Portobello district. Designer Ian Paley's creations, centered around keywords like "true value," "roots," and "lessons to be learned," offer a casual style for discerning adults, unbound by trends. The garbstore's 2011-12 Autumn/Winter collection has just launched on the online shopping site "rumors." We spoke with Paley about this season's theme, recommended items, and styling suggestions.

Unfamiliar Vintage

──What is the concept behind "The garbstore"?

Our philosophy is "unfamiliar Vintage." It's a collection that feels like it "could have existed before," perhaps a "reproduction of imagination (creation)." The designs are based on my interpretation of Britishness, English style, with French style as an essence. While the core concept remains consistent, I adapt to new interests as they arise. My preferences don't change; I simply pursue authenticity (the essence).

RAF KNIT P.O. SWEATER

──What is the theme for the 2011-12 Autumn/Winter season?

The theme is "Non Productive." It's a re-examination of the declining production landscape in the UK, viewed from an objective, detached perspective. Several items in the collection were produced by original British suppliers with whom I've had contact for over 10 years. Representative pieces for this season are a range of basic wool items used in uniforms from the 1950s to the 70s. The "LNER (LONDON NORTH EAST RAIL) BLAZER" and "RAF (ROYAL AIR FORCE) KNIT P.O. SWEATER" are particularly iconic designs. Combined, these two create a truly classic pairing.

Win Win No Work!!

The RAF (Royal Air Force) replica knit, featuring a 1950s swallow pattern, is crafted by combining threads, change buttons, and patterns that actually existed in the past. Therefore, while each detail is familiar, the overall design is entirely new.

The idea for the LNER BLAZER is inspired by images of British Rail workers from the 1960s and 70s finding various ways to slack off (laughs). The combination of these two items, and indeed the styling this season, suggests a look that embodies the "lazy Brit." Win Win No Work (laughs)!!

──Thank you.
