“Living with Mingei: Crafts” Celebrates First Anniversary with “Early Summer Glass Exhibition”

“Living with Mingei: Crafts,” a shop in Oyama-dai, Tokyo, that introduces excellent works selected from a Mingei perspective among handmade items still produced across Japan, will celebrate its first anniversary in May. To commemorate this, the “Early Summer Glass Exhibition,” featuring glassware that you’ll want to use in your daily life, will be held from Saturday, May 9th.

A Mingei Shop Advocating “Start by Using”

Enjoy your morning water in a softly hand-blown glass, and grace your daily table with colorful vessels that convey the warmth of the hand.“Living with Mingei: Crafts” offers a selection of ceramics and glassware from across Japan, as well as woven goods made from natural materials that gain character with use, lacquerware, and dyed textiles, among other crafts.

At Teshigoto, the concept of “Mingei” (folk crafts), a term coined by philosopher Sōetsu Yanagi, is presented as “wholesome and healthy handmade items,” introducing Japan’s enduring “craft culture.”

The “Early Summer Glass Exhibition,” celebrating the shop’s first anniversary, will showcase a collection of glass cups, wine glasses, plates, and bowls, primarily by next-generation glass artisans who follow the Mingei tradition, featuring healthy and beautiful handwork.

You can purchase items such as wine glasses from “Hoshi-kō Glass” in Akita Prefecture, with their satisfyingly thick, soft-rimmed hand-blown quality; pieces from “Fukuoka’s Ota Jun Hand-blown Glass Studio,” whose young artisans work with the motto “healthy, unadorned, earnest, and humble,” taught by Kura-shiki Glass’s Shinzo Otani; works from “Wakayama’s Yasushi Glass Studio,” where the artisan honed their skills in Okinawa and now works near Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine; and creations from “Okinawa Okuhara Glass Manufacturing,” a pioneer in recycled glass.
