Brew Coffee with the Bestselling "French Press"
Brewing coffee with a "press-type maker" familiar for enjoying tea?—Jørgen Bodum, the president of Bodum, personally measured the beans and water to brew coffee, stating, "The French press is the most suitable brewing method for truly enjoying delicious coffee, including its taste, aroma, and flavor." We asked about the French press, which has sold a cumulative total of over 100 million units since the first French press coffee maker was released in the 1970s.

The Charm of the French Press: Easily Recreating Professional Brewing at Home
As Jørgen Bodum says, "The ideal is for anyone to be able to easily brew delicious coffee," the French press coffee maker uses a stainless steel mesh filter, without paper filters, to thoroughly extract the coffee beans' umami, aroma, and oils. Simply add the beans, pour in hot water, wait for four minutes, and then press down firmly. Bodum even offers a special watch to time these four minutes, adding a playful touch that brings a smile.
"Bodum's philosophy for both function and design is 'simple is best.' The design stems from its functionality," he explained, slowly brewing coffee. The coffee maker itself boasts a timeless, classic, and elegant design, with a tightly fitting lid that prevents spills if tipped over and keeps the coffee warm.
"Not using paper filters or capsules also makes the French press environmentally friendly, which is another reason why it's been loved as a long-lasting product," Jørgen added.
We Look Forward to New Products from Bodum, Approaching its 70th Anniversary Next Year
Jørgen's father, Peter Bodum, founded Bodum in 1944, before the end of the war. The company gained rapid fame with the "Santos" siphon coffee maker released in 1958, which became popular worldwide. Later, Jørgen took over the company and, at the age of 24 in 1974, introduced the BODUM® "Bistro," the first French press coffee maker from Bodum.
Jørgen stated, "Basically, Bodum products are released globally with the same design. The only variation is in the available sizes. My father, Peter, quickly recognized the importance of industrial design. Dieter Rams, a designer who handled groundbreaking electrical appliances at Germany's Braun in the 1950s and inherited the Bauhaus philosophy, said, 'Good design is as little design as possible.' That concept is precisely Bodum's philosophy. This French press coffee maker is one embodiment of that."
Bodum is currently focusing on kitchen appliances as well. Regarding the Japanese market, he commented, "Although the culture differs from Europe, we feel a commonality in how highly the importance of design is understood. It's a very unique market, and we intend to continue actively appealing to it."
Bodum will celebrate its 70th anniversary next year. We hope to incorporate into our daily lives these creations of design and technology that enrich our lives.
