THONET

The "118" is Born, Inheriting Traditional Bentwood Craftsmanship

Originating from a woodworking shop founded in 1819, THONET is renowned as a leading German furniture brand, known for its development of bentwood techniques and establishment of mass production systems. Over 200 years since its founding, the company continues to evolve, and has now introduced a new chair, the "118."

The "118" inherits the traditional methods and details of THONET's iconic "214" chair, blending them with the philosophy of designer Sebastian Herkner.
THONET Chair

In developing this chair, Herkner embraced the traditional bentwood craftsmanship, still executed by hand by artisans today. He conducted numerous studies to align the chair with users' lifestyles and daily rhythms. Furthermore, aiming for a chair for everyday use by many, rather than for a select few, he incorporated elements from the "Frankfurt Chair," which was used in German schools and homes in the 1930s.
