Rain or Shine Umbrellas Featuring Lindberg's Textiles

2016 marks the centenary of Lindberg's birth and the 150th anniversary of Makita Shoten's founding, making this collaboration a commemorative initiative. Under the supervision of the Lindberg estate, numerous trial weaves were conducted to produce these umbrellas featuring Lindberg's textile designs.

Makita Shoten's proprietary technique, honed over many years, of weaving fine-count, high-density pre-dyed yarns in jacquard allows for the faithful reproduction of original designs across the collection.

The collection features four designs: "PETTERY" (1947) and "HERBARIUM" (1947), Lindberg's earliest works, along with "FRUKTLADA" (1956), and "DRAPES," a digitized rendition of his early hand-drawn pottery motifs. Each design is available in three color variations.

All umbrellas are handcrafted. From weaving the fabric and applying UV protection to the final sewing, every process is meticulously handled in-house by Makita Shoten.

Lars Dueholm Lindberg, Stig Lindberg's son, commented on the collaboration: "I am deeply pleased with this collaboration with Makita Shoten. The umbrellas, woven with such care at the foot of Mt. Fuji, are truly magnificent. If my father were alive today, I am certain he would have been immensely satisfied with this level of quality."

Stig Lindberg
Stig Lindberg (1912–1982) was a versatile designer whose work spanned ceramics, glass, textiles, and industrial products, in addition to being an artist and illustrator. A leading figure of Sweden's Golden Age and the Mid-Century era, Lindberg served as Art Director for Gustavsberg, Sweden's renowned porcelain manufacturer, overseeing the creation of numerous ceramic items. Many of Lindberg's designs became archetypes of Scandinavian design, familiar to many and instrumental in bringing tableware into everyday life in Nordic homes. Notably, Lisa Larson, who is popular in Japan today, was recognized for her talent by Lindberg and joined Gustavsberg in 1954, becoming Lindberg's cherished protégé.

Makita Shoten
Founded in 1866 in the Kōnai region at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture, Makita Shoten began weaving textiles using threads dyed with Mt. Fuji's spring water, building upon techniques and experience cultivated from the Edo period's 'Kai-Ki' (a type of silk lining for kimono haori). In 1956, they started producing umbrella fabric using polyester, followed by apparel fabric manufacturing and wholesale in 1978. Beyond fabric weaving, the company maintains an in-house umbrella workshop, making it a unique manufacturer in Japan capable of integrated production from fabric creation to umbrella assembly.
